The Jan Nerem Scholarship

One scholarship awarded in the name of
Jan Nerem, the first manager of the
Great Falls Youth Orchestra and a steadfast supporter of the arts and music education.


Awarded to further the education of a
graduating senior who has made a significant contribution to the Great Falls Youth Orchestra and exhibits potential to serve as an emissary for the value of music in society.

Graduating seniors who wish to be considered for the
Jan Nerem Scholarship must submit a written description of
why they are deserving of this award.

Application materials must be postmarked or delivered to the Great Falls Symphony office by 4:30pm on Monday, March 20, 2017.

The Great Falls Young Artist Competition

Now accepting applications!

The Great Falls Young Artist Showcase is intended to recognize and encourage the musical talent of young Montanans. The Young Artist Showcase is an opportunity for students to perform a solo work with orchestra in a live performance. 


Open to Great Falls Youth Orchestra students who play any of the standard orchestral instruments. Student must be a member of the Great Falls Youth Orchestra. Priority is given to seniors. 


Applications must be in the form of a letter. The letter must indicate what qualities the applicant would bring to a solo performance with the Youth Orchestra. The title of the repertoire to be played at the audition is to be included in the text of the letter. The letter must be received in the Great Falls Symphony office no later than 4:30pm on Wednesday January 11, 2017

One movement from a concerto or one-movement work for solo instrument and orchestra lasting between eight and fifteen minutes. It is suggested, but not required, that the piece prepared for the concert be played from memory. No unaccompanied works will be considered. The repertoire chosen by the applicant must be within the ability range of the Youth Orchestra (the Youth Orchestra music director is available for consultation on repertoire questions). 


Wednesday, January 25, 2017. Mansfield Theater – Great Falls Civic Center. Applicants auditioning must be accompanied. Applicants are responsible for providing their own accompanists. 


There will be two judges. The judges reserve the right not to award a performance.
